Spanish Water Dog Activities in the UK

Spanish Water Dogs love having a job to do, whether that’s learning new skills, working with you as a team or just burning off energy in a fun way. Below are some of the activities our members enjoy. You do not need a working line dog to take part, most of these are suitable for beginners, and the main thing is keeping it positive and enjoyable for the dog.
If you would like any information on taking part in any of the below activities, or you would like to suggest a new activity for the club, drop us a message.

Gundog

Training based on retrieving, hunting and working in partnership with your dog. This is brilliant for focus, steadiness and recall, and taps into the natural instincts many Spanish Water Dogs have. Gundog work can be enjoyed as fun training games, or taken further into working tests and trials for those who want to compete more seriously.

Showing

A great way to learn ring craft, handling skills and build your dog’s confidence around other dogs and people. Whether you are interested in breed shows or just want to have a go, showing is a friendly way to get involved and meet other owners./

Flyball

Fast paced team relay racing over jumps to retrieve a ball. Ideal for energetic dogs who love toys and speed, flyball gives high drive dogs an outlet in a structured and controlled sport.

Agility

Jumps, tunnels, contact equipment and plenty of teamwork. Agility builds fitness, body awareness and confidence, and is fantastic for strengthening the bond between you and your dog at any leve

Hoopers

A lower impact alternative to agility using hoops, barrels and tunnels, with more distance handling. It is great for dogs who love to run and for handlers who want something flowing and fun without tight turns or high impact obstacles.

Water Work

Many Spanish Water Dogs love water, and this can be a great way to build confidence and fitness. Activities might include swimming, retrieves and introductory water based exercises in safe, controlled environments.

Mantrailing

Dogs learn to follow a specific person’s scent trail over different terrain. This is amazing mental stimulation, builds confidence and independence, and is suitable for most dogs because they work on a harness and make their own decisions.

Scentwork

Teaching your dog to search for a target scent and clearly indicate when they have found it. Brilliant for busy brains, nervous dogs and rainy days, scentwork is accessible, rewarding and very satisfying to watch.

Rally

A course made up of signs where you and your dog perform different obedience style exercises together. Rally is structured but friendly, and is excellent for improving engagement, heelwork and communication without the formality of traditional obedience.

Canicross

Cross country running with your dog attached to you on a harness and bungee line. Great for active owners and energetic dogs, canicross builds fitness for both of you while still being all about teamwork and control.
